Google Launches Gemini 4 Argon to Challenge GPT-6 Dominance

Published: October 7, 2026

On September 30, Google DeepMind released Gemini 4 Argon, its first non-Flash proprietary model in over seven months. The launch marks Google's most direct challenge yet to OpenAI's GPT-6 family.

Benchmark Performance

Argon scored 53 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, tying GPT-6 Astra and leading GPT-6.1 Sol. In the Text Arena, it claimed the top spot with a score of 1533.

Pricing

Argon launched at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens — half the unit price of Claude Opus 5.5. Cached input discounts reach 95%. At launch discount rates, cost per task is $1.99, roughly 60% of GPT-6 Astra.

The Hidden Cost

Argon's average task output is 62,000 tokens versus Astra's 27,000. After promotional pricing ends, standard rates of $4 input / $20 output will push per-task cost above Astra by about 20%.

Availability

Argon is currently limited to cybersecurity defense teams in Google's Fairwind program, with gradual rollout to paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers.
