Building Persistent Agent Memory with claude-mem
Published: October 7, 2026
claude-mem provides persistent context storage and injection between agent sessions, and has become the de facto standard for long-term memory.
Why Persistent Memory Matters
Without memory, agents forget everything between sessions. claude-mem solves this by storing and retrieving context automatically.
Step 1: Install
pip install claude-mem
Step 2: Initialize
from claude_mem import Memory
memory = Memory(storage="./memory.db")
Step 3: Store Context
memory.store(
session_id="user-123",
key="preferences",
value={"language": "Python", "style": "concise"}
)
Step 4: Inject Context
context = memory.retrieve(session_id="user-123")
prompt = f"User preferences: {context}\n\nNow answer: ..."
Best Practices
- Store only durable facts, not transient state
- Use namespaced keys to avoid collisions
- Prune old entries periodically
